PRP Therapy

Regenerative medicine is a new term for many people. One that is making waves across the country. East Lake Regenerative Medical Center in St. Cloud is proud to be a pioneer in this industry on the local level and brings to you many of the innovative treatments and therapies this forward-reaching branch of medicine delivers.

What Is Regenerative Medicine?

Regenerative medicine relies on the power of your own stem cells to help your body regenerate faster, making it possible for you to recover from injuries at a much faster pace than when using modern medicine to treat them. The understanding is that your own stem cells can be used to activate your body’s natural tendencies to heal itself, even if you’re well past the age when these stem cells would normally be available to assist in the healing process.

What Is Platelet-Rich Plasma?

Platelet-rich plasma treatment, PRP for short, makes use of injections made up of concentrated amounts of your own platelets to help accelerate your healing. This can be used in tendons, muscles, joints, and ligaments.

The concentrated injections are created by taking a few tubes of your own blood before running them through a centrifuge that helps to concentrate the platelets. These platelets are then injected into the very tissue that has been injured or diseased. This process promotes rapid regeneration (hence the name regenerative medicine) in that area that aids in the healing process.

In some instances, your physician will use ultrasound imagery to guide the injections and make sure they’re hitting the appropriate areas to provide maximum healing benefits for your condition.

What Conditions Can PRP Therapy Treat?

PRP therapy is currently used to treat a variety of conditions. Some of which are even cosmetic in nature. Among the conditions platelet-rich plasma is used to treat are the following:

  • Tendinitis.
  • Arthritis.
  • Joint injuries.
  • Tendon injuries.
  • Muscle injuries.
  • Hair loss from androgenic alopecia.
  • Visible signs of aging (Vampire facials use PRP injections).

As you can see, PRP treatment is not a one-shot proposal. The belief is that as we use it more frequently, we will find advanced treatments that can be aided through stem cell therapy, such as PRP.

While much of the focus concerning PRP treatments has been on addressing the regenerative properties it provides, the fact is that these treatments are also known to reduce pain while improving mobility and range of motion among many patients receiving it.
